Richard Dawkins claims that societies in which atheism constitutes the majority viewpoint are the most civilized communities, and attempts to conclude that religion is unnecessary to human beings. Yet the most civilized societies by that criterion are those devoid of any human qualities, which constantly flounder in the chaos and tension caused by atheism.
Dawkins' greatest error here is this: Atheism can never bestow prosperity and civilization on societies. On the contrary, it brings with it restlessness, soullessness, unhappiness and lovelessness. It is Allah Who bestows well-being, strength, wealth and civilization. And our Lord imparts civilization, wealth and well-being to those whom He chooses. Communities with high levels of civilization enjoying the well-being ordained by Allah existed in the past just as they do today. Some of these denied Allah, despite the wealth, power and civilization He bestowed on them. As revealed in the Qur'an, however, because of their denial these communities eventually faced the wrath of Allah when they did not expect at all. Nothing was left of their civilizations. Pharaoh, one of the worst deniers of the time, who opposed the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) with all his military might, is one of the best-known examples of civilization, wealth and prosperity. Allah gave him great wealth in this world, but because of his denial He destroyed him, and his irreligious people, in the sea. The wealthy and arrogant Pharaoh was punished for denying that there was no other deity or power than Allah, and repentance at the moment of his death availed him nothing. Allah reveals in verses:
We brought the tribe of Israel across the sea and Pharaoh and his troops pursued them out of tyranny and enmity. Then, when he was on the point of drowning, he said, "I believe that there is no deity but Him in Whom the tribe of Israel believe. I am one of the Muslims." "What, now! When previously you rebelled and were one of the corrupters? Today We will preserve your body so you can be a sign for people who come after you. Surely many people are heedless of Our signs." (Surah Yunus, 90-92)
Let Dawkins continue to believe that some communities' prosperity and civilization stem from irreligiousness, it is still obvious that he has never reflected that they suffer from unhappiness, loneliness and insecurity caused by lack of faith. He fails to see that they live empty lives without love, that they are selfish and self-interested, and have lost such virtues as humanity, friendship, loyalty and helpfulness. It is Allah Who bestows well-being on individuals and societies, and Allah Who will reward the deniers. This is also revealed in verses in the Qur'an:
Leave the deniers, who live a life of ease, to Me, and tolerate them a little longer. With Us there are shackles and a Blazing Fire. (Surat al-Muzzammil, 11-12)
